Try 'host <hostname>', that ought to give you the numerical
address.

Chameleon doesn't have a 'host' feature. Also, some implementations
need 'host <hostname.>' to return valid IP's. What's needed is a
WinDig (a la 'dig' for UNIX boxes).
But, neither will work unless you have some form of nameservice
available to you. I get the impression that the original poster
didn't, or else he would not have had the problems he alluded to.
